  • We often talk about five senses which are: Taste , Touch, Smell, Sight and Hearing.

We make use of these senses to make sense of the world around us. Children, right from birth, make use of these senses to learn about things around them. Providing opportunities for children to actively use their senses as they explore their world through sensory activities is crucial to brain development.

Junior DPS Sensory Activities
  • Here are the top five reasons why sensory activities are important for kids:

    • 1. Sensory activities build nerve connections that lead to the child’s ability to complete more complex learning tasks.
    • 2. Sensory activities support language development, cognitive growth, fine and gross motor skills, problem solving skills, and social interaction.
    • 3. These activities aid in developing and enhancing memory
    • 4. These activities help calming an anxious child
    • 5. These help children learn sensory attributes (hot, cold, sticky, dry)
Junior DPS Sensory Activities
  • Being a Preschool, the age of our kids mostly ranges from two to five years. This is the most crucial time for the kids as their brain develops fastest before the age of five. At Junior DPS, we realize this and have adapted our curriculum to include activities that stimulate growth, enhance learning and increase awareness among children.

These activities stimulate children’s senses, facilitate exploration and naturally encourage children to investigate and explore. The sensory activities allow children to refine their thresholds for different sensory information helping their brain to create stronger connections to process and respond to sensory information. Our sensory activities usually involve utilizing scientific methods, play cards and specific toys to make these activities interesting and fun that kids enjoy.

  • Examples of our sensory activities are below. These activities not only target to grow sensory capabilities but also other skills that are crucial for child development. We keep conducting many such activities and plays that involve sensory development.

    • Flower Shop: A makeshift shop is arranged in the school with different flowers where children learn about different smells and types of flowers.
    • Making Fruit Salad: A cold cooking class where children are taught how to make salad and given for tasting flavours – sour, sweet or salty.
  • To conclude, I would say that sensory activities lead to a child’s ability to complete more complex learning tasks and supports cognitive growth, language development, gross motor skills, social interaction and problem-solving skills.
